Back in 2019, we reviewed the deformed Enduro mountain bike pedals that use magnets to hold the rider’s feet in place. Well, the Austria-based magped company has now announced an improved new model called Sport2.
In order to repeat our previous report, magped is designed for riders who want to obtain the advantages of the so-called “clamp-free” pedal (such as improving pedal efficiency and reducing the chance of foot slipping) but still want to be able to release the foot from the pedal. .
Taking these factors into consideration, each pedal has an upwardly facing neodymium magnet on its platform that engages with a corrosion-resistant flat steel plate bolted to the underside of an SPD-compatible shoe. In the normal pedaling process, when the foot moves vertically up and down, the magnet and the pedal remain connected. However, a simple outward twisting action of the foot will separate the two.
Although the pedals are already lighter and more stylish than the closest competitor, MagLock, each pair of Sport2 is said to weigh 56 grams lighter than the original magped Sport model, but it is also stronger. In addition to the height-adjustable magnets (mounted on polymer dampers), each pedal also has a CNC-cut aluminum body, a color spindle, and an improved three-bearing system.
These magnetic intensities can be ordered among three different magnetic intensities selected by the buyer, depending on the rider’s weight. Depending on the choice of magnet, the weight of the pedals ranges from 420 to 458 grams per pair and provides up to 38 kg (84 lb) of pulling force. It should be noted that, unlike the Enduro model we reviewed, Sport2s only has one magnet on one side of each pedal.
Sport2s with magnets are now available through the company’s website. They are available in dark gray, orange, green and pink, and the price of each pair is between US$115 and US$130. In the video below, you can see their usage.
