In 2018, Uber imported around 8,000 e-Bikes to the US from China within a span of two weeks, as a news report by USA Today.
The ride hailing giant seems to be preparing for a significant expansion of its cycle fleet, putting its production on “fast forward.”
Cycling plays a major role in personal mobility around the world, but it could play a much bigger role to create positive impact on the global environment. Given the convenience, health benefits, and affordability of bicycles, bicycles provide a far greater proportion of urban passenger transportation, meanwhile helping reduce energy use and CO2 emissions worldwide.
According to a newly-released report, a global shift to increased cycling and electric biking observed in recent years could cut energy use and carbon dioxide emissions from urban transportation by up to 10 percent by 2050 compared to current estimates.
The report also finds that the shift could save society more than $24 trillion. The right mix of investments and public policies can bring bikes and e-bikes to cover up to 14 percent of urban miles travelled by 2050.
“Building cities for cycling will not only lead to cleaner air and safer streets—it will save people and governments a substantial amount of money, which can be spent on other things. That’s smart urban policy.”
The world increasingly looks at cycling industry, whether in competitive racing, recreational pursuits or the daily commute. It is not difficult to foresee the constant growth in cycling popularity as people’s passion for cycling intensifies due to a rising environmental-protection consciousness.
